about threadsy

what's threadsy?
threadsy is the world's first integrated communication client. it pulls together your existing email, Facebook, Twitter, chat, and the broader social web into a unique, enjoyable experience.

threadsy groups all of your inbound email and social network messages into a single inbox and all of your Facebook news feed and tweets into a single stream. More than simply aggregating information, threadsy integrates the services to provide deep context on the people you communicate with.

what problem does threadsy solve?
online communication is changing fast. it's quickly becoming more public, social, and powerful, but it's also becoming a fragmented mess. the average 25-year-old now has 6 different accounts to check every day. email used to be the only online communication; now it's just a piece of a much bigger tapestry that includes social networks, instant messaging, mobile devices, and rich content sharing. threadsy is an exploration of how bringing these different facets of online communication together in one place can help deepen your connections to other people while making your life easier and more enjoyable.

what do I need to try it out?
threadsy is free and works right in your web browser, no need to download anything ever. it works with your existing email addresses, facebook, and twitter. you can still use the old sites if you want.

what does the name threadsy mean anyway?
nothing in particular. although it does conjure up a few ideas that are central to our vision of harnessing all of the interesting, relevant 'threads' of information that are out there on the web begging to be brought together in an intelligent, organized way. also fyi, we're definitely not affiliated with http://threadz.com.

is threadsy missing a service you really want? if so please let us know in our feedback forum

can I add more than one account from the same service (e.g., 2 gmail accounts?)
yes, you may add as many accounts from the same service as you want, with the exception of facebook since it's against their terms of service.

can I add my IMAP email accounts?
yes. when you add an email account, threadsy will try to automatically add it with default settings. if this doesn't work, you can manually adjust your IMAP settings. please see your email service provider for correct settings. for each IMAP account, you must specify:

Note that some IMAP email accounts don't use generic IMAP settings and can't be added to threadsy at this time.

how can I add or delete an external account?
go to your settings page by clicking the settings link at the top. to add an account, enter your email and password. to delete an account, click the 'remove' button next to that existing accounts.

threadsy can no longer access one of my accounts, help!
the problem might be that you've changed your password recently for that account. if this is the case, click 'settings' and then hover over the account you want to update and click 'password'. this will only update the password that threadsy uses to access your account and won't change the password for the external site. if that doesn't fix the problem, try logging in to the external account and see if there's another issue.

how do I give one of my accounts a nickname?
say you want to call one of your accounts 'school' instead of its default name 'gmail2'. go to the settings page and click the 'rename' link next to the name of one of your existing accounts. enter a new name and click 'save'

can I create 2 threadsy accounts?
yes, but you can only associate a specific external account with 1 threadsy account.

how can I remove my threadsy account?
sorry to see you go. if you no longer want a threadsy account, just remove all of your external accounts by clicking the 'settings' link in the top right. all of your personal data will be removed. please note that your threadsy username and password may be removed, so if you decide to use threadsy again in the future, you may need to re-sign up.

are my existing account passwords safe with threadsy?
absolutely. threadsy uses industry-standard encryption to insure that no one but you will ever have access to your passwords.

do you share my personal info with anyone?
threadsy never shares your email address, contacts, or personal information with third parties. see our privacy policy for full details on how threadsy protects your privacy.

reading your messages

i see 2 columns in threadsy, what shows up where?
threadsy separates everything you receive into 2 buckets: inbound and streams.

how can I tell which one of my accounts a message is from?
look for the icon on the right side of each message. hover over it to see the full account address.

where do all those profile pics come from?
facebook, gmail, and twitter depending on which accounts you add. you can only see profile photos of friends or those that are publicly available.

how do I delete messages?
there are 3 ways to delete a message.
1. hover over a message you want to delete and click the icon
2. check the checkbox next to the message(s) you want to delete and click the button in the top navigation menu.
3. when any message is open, click the delete button at the bottom of the message.

what happens when I delete a message? can I get it back?
when you delete a message, it moves to your trash folder in threadsy and also to the trash folder in the associated external account. until we add an undelete option, you can get it back by forwarding it to yourself.

when I search what is being searched?
messages in your email inboxes and sent folders. we plan to add more advanced search options in the future, so let us know if there's anything you'd really like to see here.

how frequently does threadsy check for new messages?
threadsy checks frequently when you're signed in and less frequently when you're not. you can also do a manual refresh by clicking on the 'inbound' link.

where are the messages from my folders/labels?
threadsy currently shows messages from your inbox, sent, and trash folders. we plan to add support for your other folders in the future.

how do I see inbound messages from just one particular account?
in the top inbound navigation, click the account you'd like to view. the default view ('all)' shows every message from all accounts that you've added.

how do I open a message?
just click on it, that should work.

what is the info in the right column when I open a message or click on a person's name or profile photo?
when available, threadsy automatically shows additional info about the sender of the message you opened or the person you clicked in the right column. we call this the person's profile. the profile is divided into 3 sections that can be browsed in greater detail by clicking the 'more' links:

bio: shows basic information about the person including a short bio, web pages they have, age/birthday, relationship status, where they live, school, and work info. all of this info is either publicly available or is visible to you based on your social network relationships.
photos: shows the latest photos of the person and also photos the person has taken. photos of the person come from facebook, and photos the person has taken come from flickr. clicking any photo or the 'slideshow' link opens a full slideshow for a better viewing experience.
updates: shows the sender's latest updates on facebook and twitter.

sending messages

how do i send a new message?
click the button in the navigation menu beneath the logo.

how do i reply to a message?
there are 2 ways to reply to a message.
1. quick reply: hover over any message in your list and click the icon that appears. this opens a quick reply view that lets you easily dash off a quick response.
2. normal reply: open a message and then click the 'reply' button (or if multiple senders, the 'reply all' button). this opens a full reply view that lets you add/remove recipients, edit the subject, add attachments, change the account you're sending from, and use full text formatting options.

how do i add addresses to a message?
start typing the address in the To box. if it's a known address, it will show up as an option below. otherwise just type the full address and press 'enter'

how do i select the account i want to send from?
in the new message or reply views, select the account you want to send from in the From dropdown box.

how do i add attachments to my message?
in the new message or reply views, click the '+attach files' link to add one or multiple attachments to your message. note that big files may take a while to attach... you can monitor their progress in the thermometer icon.

can i save a draft of my message?
not yet, but we plan to add support for drafts soon.
